Yadiyah-dee
My notes on how founders and investors thought. Everything I build can ask them.
From yād, Persian for memory.
When should a founder turn down money that comes with conditions?

Bernie Marcus › Walking away from Ross Perot · Founders #45Leadership
Offered $2 million for 70% of Home Depot, he walked out mid-meeting after Perot said, three times, “My people don’t drive Cadillacs.”
-
Sid Meier › Inversion · Founders #195Product
Refused $250,000 for the rights to all his games. Taking it would have capped the ceiling for good.
-
Fritz Haber › Applications · Founders #86Failure
Signed for 10% of net. That deal set the ceiling on his wealth forever.
Say no when the terms, not the money, decide what the business can become. Marcus and Meier walked away; Haber signed, and lived inside his 10%.
Why I built it
My own almanac, inspired by David Senra’s Founders podcast. I’d listened to hundreds of episodes and read the books behind them, and none of it was anywhere I could search.
Learning is not memorising information. Learning is changing your behaviour.
How it works
ModelCodePerson
-
Choose
I pick what goes in: business books and Founders episodes.
Person157books433episodes -
Write
A model writes each up as a note on the person: how they thought, what they got wrong, and whether they’re mostly a warning.
Model513notes -
Check
Every quote is checked word for word against the book or transcript it came from.
Code -
File
Each passage is filed by meaning, not by word, so a question finds the idea even when the words differ.

Ask
Eli asks it before it judges a company. My assistants and I ask it while we work.
Model -
Test
Questions with known answers must still find them after every change, or the change comes out.
Code
None of it is published. The notes are for me, and the books aren’t mine to share.

The rule it follows
Study the failures as closely as the successes.
